You started in half guard and got smashed flat. The instinct is to bench-press the weight off your chest — and it is exactly how you get passed. The recovery is smaller than that, and it always runs through the same arm.
The position is easy to describe and miserable to live in. You still have one of the opponent's legs trapped between yours — so on paper you are "in half guard" — but everything above the waist has gone wrong. Your back is flat on the mat. His chest is welded across your sternum, his shoulder is grinding into your jaw in a cross-face, and his far arm has swum over the top of your near arm and pinned it to the floor. You cannot see the far side of the room. You are, by the letter of the scoreboard, still in guard. By every other measure you are two seconds from being passed.
Every practitioner meets this position, and almost everyone's first answer is the same wrong one: push. The arm that is still free goes to the opponent's chest or shoulder, the elbow extends, and the whole body strains to bench-press the weight up and away. It is the most natural reflex in grappling and one of the most reliably fatal. Pressing a heavier, better-based opponent off your chest does not move him. It empties your own frame, hands him your extended arm, and lets him ride the push straight into a pass.
The recovery is the opposite of the reflex. It is smaller, quieter, and counterintuitive: you do not create space by pushing the opponent away, you create it by bridging into him, and you do not escape with the free arm, you escape with the one that feels trapped — by winning the far-side underhook. A flattened, losing half guard and a dangerous, attacking half guard are separated by exactly one arm and a few inches of hip movement. This is a story about how you travel that distance, and why the half-guard specialists who built the modern position — from Roberto Correa to Bernardo Faria to Lucas Leite — all run the same recovery pattern, in the same order, every time.
The bottom half guard is recovered from the same place it is lost: the underhook. You are never fighting to push the opponent off — you are fighting for one arm, and once you win it, the escape has already happened.
The recovery is younger than the position, because for most of jiu-jitsu's history there was nothing to recover to. Into the 1980s, the standard coaching cue for a flattened half guard was not "recover" but "get out." Half guard was a failure state — the last checkpoint before side control — and the instruction was to hip-escape back to closed guard or turn in and stand. A student pinned in bottom half was a student who had already made a mistake, and the only correct response was to undo it as fast as possible.
The shift came with Roberto "Gordo" Correa. After a knee injury as a purple belt at Gracie Barra around 1989 made the closed guard's leg-clamp untenable, Correa spent years living in the half guard his coaches had taught him to abandon — and his central discovery reframed the whole position. The engine was not the trapped leg but the : the bottom player's arm threaded under the opponent's near armpit, controlling the shoulder. With that underhook, the man on top cannot flatten you, cannot finish the cross-face, and cannot pass. Correa turned the position from a leak into a launch pad — and, crucially, gave the pinned bottom player a destination. Recovery now had a target: not "get back to closed guard," but "get back to the underhook."
The 2000s systematized the recovery around distance and framing. The knee shield — the top knee wedged across the opponent's chest or hip, the structure many players know as Z-guard — became the standard tool for buying the space to fight for the underhook in the first place, converting the position from a pin you survive into a frame you rebuild from. Lucas Leite, a multiple-time world champion out of the Checkmat lineage, codified the twisting, pressure-driven coyote half guard and popularized the dogfight — the moment both players come up off the mat onto their knees, the bottom player's underhook against the top player's overhook — as the reversal point the recovery is aiming for. Bernardo Faria built multiple IBJJF World titles on a bottom game that treated half guard, including the recovery of it, as a primary offense rather than a defensive stall, and his instructional material became the pedagogical standard. Tom DeBlass, an IBJJF No-Gi Worlds black-belt champion and ADCC veteran, emphasized the position's defensive resilience — precisely the recovery half of the equation.
Their contributions differ in flavor, but the through-line is one idea: a smashed half guard is not a lost position. It is an underhook you have not won yet.
Start by naming the problem precisely, because the recovery is a direct answer to each piece of it. A fully passed-and-pinned bottom half guard has four features working against you at once: your back is flat, so you have no ability to turn or bridge; the cross-face turns your head away and kills your ability to face the opponent; the underhook belongs to the passer — his far arm is over your near arm, an overhook, flattening your shoulder; and your hips are pinned under his weight, unable to move. The recovery undoes them in a specific order, because trying to win the underhook while your head is still cross-faced and your back is still flat is trying to build the roof before the walls.
Nothing works while your head is turned away. The first job is to face the opponent again. The near-side forearm — the one on the same side as the cross-facing arm — frames against his shoulder or biceps to create the smallest amount of relief, and the head turns back into him, chin toward the centerline. This is not the bench-press: the frame is a wedge that holds distance, elbow tight, not an extension that pushes weight. You are not trying to move him. You are trying to face him. Everything downstream depends on it.
Here is the move that feels wrong and is right. To make space, you bridge — but you bridge toward the opponent, driving your near shoulder and hip up and into his weight, not arching away from him. Bridging away flattens you further; bridging in momentarily unweights his chest and lets you slide your hips out from underneath. The bridge is a bump, not a buck: a short, sharp elevation that buys a half-second of light contact. In that half-second, you shrimp — hip-escape your hips back and to the side — and get your bottom shoulder blade off the mat. The instant one shoulder blade lifts, you are no longer flat. You are on your side, and the whole geometry of the position has changed.
Now you build the wall that keeps you off your back. As you come to your side, the top knee slides in across the opponent's torso — shin angled across his chest or wedged into his near hip — as a frame. This is the knee shield, the Z-guard structure. Its job is spacing: it props the opponent up off you, prevents him from re-flattening you and re-establishing the cross-face, and holds the gap open while your hands do the real work. The knee shield is the recovery's checkpoint — the point at which you have stopped losing and can start fighting on your own terms. A recovered knee shield is a defensible position from which nothing is being passed.
Everything so far exists to make this possible. With your head faced, your side won, and the knee shield holding distance, the near-side arm now digs for the far-side underhook — threading under the opponent's armpit to control the shoulder. This is the same arm that felt trapped under his overhook at the start; the recovery is largely the process of swimming it back under. When it lands, the position inverts. He can no longer flatten you, because your underhook lifts and turns his shoulder every time he tries. He can no longer cross-face, because you are on your side and facing him. He can no longer pass, because the underhook owns the angle. This is the moment the seed of every half-guard attack is planted — and the reason the specialists say, flatly, that the underhook is the position.
The recovery is complete only when you have gone somewhere better, and from the underhook there are two standard roads. The first is the dogfight: using the underhook, you come up off your side onto your knees, driving into the opponent so that you are chest-to-chest on your knees with the underhook against his overhook. From the dogfight you finish the reversal — coming up and over into top position, often landing in his half guard or into side control. The second road is recovering full guard: instead of coming up, you use the knee shield and the underhook to face him squarely, frame off, and swim your trapped leg back inside to re-close or re-establish a two-legged guard. Which road you take depends on his reaction — if he drives forward to re-flatten you, you take the dogfight into and past his base; if he pulls back to reset his posture, you follow the space and recover guard.
It is worth stating plainly, because it is the single organizing idea of the entire escape. The reason the recovery runs through the underhook and not through pushing is leverage. An overhead press pits your extended arm against the opponent's entire based weight — a fight you lose. The underhook pits the rotation of the opponent's shoulder against the strength of your whole torso and hips — a fight you win, even against someone much heavier. Correa's insight, and the reason it scaled into a worldwide system, is that the underhook converts a strength contest you cannot win into a leverage contest you can. Every step before it — the frame, the bridge, the shrimp, the knee shield — exists only to buy the position from which that arm can be won. Lose the underhook again and you are back to step one. Keep it, and the escape is already finished; the sweep is just the follow-through.
In 2026, the half-guard recovery is one of the most heavily trained sequences in the sport, for a reason that has nothing to do with fashion: it is unavoidable. When a more dynamic guard fails — a De la Riva hook stripped, an X-guard smashed, a butterfly hook flattened — the retreating guard player almost always lands in some flavor of bottom half on the way down. The recovery from that pinned half guard is therefore the universal fallback of modern guard retention. Every guard, no matter how flashy, eventually needs the same underhook-and-knee-shield skeleton to survive its own collapse.
The knee shield in particular has become foundational to no-gi retention at the highest level. It is the spacing tool that prevents the smash pass while keeping the underhook fight alive, and it is the on-ramp for much of the modern leg game: competitors in the leg-lock generation frequently route through a knee-shield half guard before entering single-leg-X and ashi-garami. The point is that a recovered half guard is no longer just a survived one — it is the entrance to offense. This is the genuine change from Correa's era. In the 1990s, recovering half guard meant getting back to a self-contained sweep engine. Today the recovery flows onward: half guard to deep half to sweep, half guard to a back-take, knee-shield half guard to a leg entanglement, in continuous chains rather than a single reversal.
The instructional market confirms how load-bearing the recovery is. Half-guard-centered systems from Faria, Leite and DeBlass have been among the most consistently sold grappling instructionals of the past decade, outperforming flashier open-guard content because the position is genuinely inescapable — everyone ends up flattened in bottom half eventually. The only question the modern game asks is whether you trained the way out before you needed it. The recovery is not a beginner's remedial skill that black belts outgrow. It is the same sequence at every level, run faster, sooner, and with fewer wasted inches.

White belt learns the single most important thing: do not go flat, and do not bench-press. The first lesson is purely negative — stop pushing the opponent off your chest with a straight arm, and stop lying flat on your back with a trapped leg. If a white belt can stay on their side in bottom half for thirty seconds without panicking, the recovery has already begun.
Blue belt learns the underhook is the answer. The realization that reorganizes the position is that the escape is not a push but an arm — that you recover by winning the far underhook, not by making space above your chest. Blue belt is where a student stops fighting the weight and starts fighting the shoulder.
Purple belt learns the sequence, not the pieces. Frame, bridge in, shrimp, knee shield, underhook, come up — in order, as one motion, against resistance. Purple belt is where the knee shield stops being a panic frame and becomes a deliberate checkpoint, and where the dogfight becomes a real reversal rather than a scramble.
Brown belt learns to recover before they are pinned. The brown belt reads the pass two steps early and inserts the frame and the knee shield while the passer is still working, so the "recovery" happens before the flatten does. They know the exit — dogfight or full guard — before they arrive.
Black belt rebuilds the recovery from the passer's perspective. They know exactly what the top player wants — the cross-face, the overhook, the flatten — and they win each of those fights pre-emptively, so the smash never fully lands. The black belt does not "escape" bottom half so much as refuse to be fully caught in it.

1. Bench-pressing the opponent off. The cardinal error, and the one the whole recovery is built to replace. Extending the free arm to push the opponent's chest away does not move him — it empties your frame, feeds him your arm, and rides your own push into the pass. Fix: never push weight off with a straight arm. Frame with a bent elbow to hold distance, and put the real work into the underhook and the hips.
2. Staying flat on your back. A flat back is a passed guard on a delay. If both shoulder blades are on the mat, the trapped leg is a formality and the cross-face and pass are coming. Fix: live on your side, one shoulder blade off the mat, from the first instant — bridge in and shrimp to get there and stay there.
3. Bridging away instead of into the opponent. Arching away from the opponent to "make space" flattens you further and drives your hips deeper under his weight. Fix: bridge toward him — a short bump into his chest and hip that unweights him for the half-second you need to shrimp out.
4. Knee shield pointed at the throat. A shield jammed too high, across the neck, invites the opponent to swim under it, control the head, and pass. Fix: frame the shin across the chest or into the near hip, foot flexed and active — a wall that holds distance, not a lever aimed at the jaw.
5. Winning the underhook and then stalling. The underhook is the checkpoint, not the finish. Players who secure it and then rest let the opponent re-pummel, strip it back, and start over. Fix: the moment the underhook lands, come up — into the dogfight or toward full guard — before he can answer it. A static underhook is an underhook on a timer.
At open mat this week, run the recovery as a positional round from the worst version of the position. The bottom player starts fully pinned: flat on their back, cross-faced, near arm trapped under the top player's overhook, one leg still hooked in half guard. The top player's only job is to hold the flatten and finish the pass. The bottom player's only job is to reach the knee shield with the underhook — no sweeps, no submissions, just from smashed-flat to on-your-side-with-the-underhook.
You will fail, and fail fast. Then you will fail slower. Then you will reach the knee shield once, and then most times. That single transition — flat to framed to underhooked — is the entire escape, isolated.
Add a second round in which the bottom player, having reached the underhook and the knee shield, is allowed exactly one finish: come up to the dogfight. No back-takes, no deep half, no submissions — just the reversal off the frame that makes it possible. Run both weekly. The half-guard recovery is a position of small margins, won by repetition, not by new moves.
The bottom half-guard recovery is the hinge between defense and offense — the sequence that turns a nearly-passed guard back into an attacking one.
Every one of these was reached by someone who got flattened, refused to push, and won an arm instead. That refusal is the map.
