The arm triangle is the choke that uses the opponent's own shoulder against him. Born as a judo pin called kata-gatame, it became jiu-jitsu's most reliable top-position finish — the strangle a passer collects almost as a receipt for winning the position.
On 18 May 2013, in São Paulo, Ronaldo "Jacaré" Souza made his UFC debut against Chris Camozzi, a late-notice replacement, at UFC on FX 8. Souza had been one of the most decorated grapplers of his generation before he ever put on four-ounce gloves — a multiple-time gi and no-gi world champion — and the fight followed the shape everyone expected. He closed distance, put Camozzi on the mat, and passed to mount inside the first round.
What happened next is the whole article in one motion.
From mount, Souza scooped Camozzi's head and drove one of Camozzi's own arms up alongside his neck. He clasped his hands, tucked his head, and then — instead of staying square on top — he slid off the mount to the side, chest to shoulder, and settled his weight. There was no long grind, no back-and-forth. The referee stopped it at 3:37 of the first round. Camozzi's lights were out before he could tap. The finish earned Souza an extra fifty thousand dollars for Submission of the Night.
The submission was the arm triangle — in judo's older vocabulary, kata-gatame, the "shoulder hold." It is one of the few chokes in grappling that a practitioner does not so much apply to an opponent as apply with him: the strangle is completed by the opponent's own trapped shoulder, pressed into one side of his neck, while the attacker's arm and head close the other. It is the finish a passer earns as a near-automatic dividend of winning the top position, and it is the reason coaches tell white belts that passing the guard is not the end of the round but the beginning of the next problem.
The arm triangle is the only high-percentage choke in jiu-jitsu that a top player can complete without a collar, without the back, and without the opponent's cooperation — because half of the strangle is built from the opponent's own body.
The arm triangle does not begin in Brazil. It begins in a Tokyo dojo in the 1880s, and it begins as a pin.
Kata-gatame — 肩固, literally "shoulder hold" — has been in the Kodokan syllabus since Jigoro Kano systematized judo, with the institute's founding conventionally dated to 1882. It sits inside osaekomi-waza, the family of mat holds, alongside its more famous sibling kesa-gatame (the scarf hold). In its original judo context, kata-gatame is not a submission at all. It is a way to pin a supine opponent from the side by trapping one of his arms across his own throat and controlling his head — a position judo scores for holding, not for finishing.
The submission lived inside the pin the whole time. Because the trapped arm crosses the neck, and because the controlling head and shoulder close the far side, a fighter held in a tight kata-gatame is already having his blood flow compromised. Under judo's competitive rules, though, there was rarely a reason to hunt the choke: a clean hold-down won the match outright, so the strangle inside it went largely uncultivated as an offensive weapon.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu inherited the position and inverted its purpose. In a ruleset with no timed pin and a premium on the submission, the "hold" became a "choke." Jiu-jitsu practitioners kept the trapped-shoulder mechanic and added the details that turn a control into a finish: the specific hand connection, the head position that seals the near carotid, and — most importantly — the practice of leaving the square top position to walk the hips off to one side and multiply the squeeze. What judo taught as a place to rest, jiu-jitsu rebuilt as a place to end the fight.
By the modern grappling and MMA eras, "arm triangle" and "kata-gatame" had become effectively interchangeable in the community's mouth, with "arm triangle" the everyday English term and "head-and-arm choke" a common third label. The technique's clearest ambassador in the cage has been Souza, whose game made the finish look less like an opportunistic catch and more like the intended destination of every guard pass.
One terminological caution belongs here, because it is the single most common confusion around the position. The word "triangle" in "arm triangle" describes only the closed geometric figure — the ring formed around the neck by the trapped arm, the attacker's arm, and the shoulders. It has nothing to do with the leg triangle. The two share a name and a strangling principle and almost nothing else, and keeping them straight is the first job of anyone learning either.
The arm triangle is a blood choke: it does not crush the windpipe, it compresses both carotid arteries and cuts circulation to the brain. A correctly applied blood choke acts in seconds, not the long minutes of an air choke, which is why arm-triangle finishes so often arrive before the opponent can tap. The technique's engine is a single idea, and everything else is detail in service of it.
The core idea: one carotid is closed by the opponent's own shoulder. The attacker traps one of the opponent's arms up alongside the opponent's own head, so the ball of that shoulder presses into one side of his neck. That is the half of the strangle the attacker gets for free. The attacker's own arm and head then close the other side of the neck. Squeeze the two sides together and both carotids shut at once. This is why the position is so unforgiving: the opponent cannot open the near side, because the thing pressing it is his own body.
The position is built, not snatched, and it has a small number of load-bearing constraints.
1. The trapped arm goes high and stays high. The opponent's arm must be pinned above his own ear line, wrist near his own head, so the shoulder — not the softer bicep — is what beds into the neck. An arm trapped low, across the chest, produces a loose, escapable frame. High and tight is the difference between a choke and a hug.
2. The head drives across, ear to the mat. The attacker's head presses into the far side of the opponent's head, driving it away and keeping the near carotid sealed. A raised head leaks pressure and gives the opponent room to turn in and recover the arm.
3. The hands connect, palm to palm or in a gable grip — never fingers laced. One arm wraps behind the opponent's neck; the other completes the ring under the trapped shoulder. The hands meet in a flat palm-to-palm join or a gable grip (palms pressed, thumbs up). Interlaced fingers are both weaker and a real injury risk under a live squeeze. The forearm and bicep of the wrapping arm are the surface that closes the far carotid.
4. The elbows draw in; the choke is a shrinking ring, not a pull. The finish is not a yank on the neck. It is the whole ring — arms and shoulders — contracting. Beginners try to pull the head; black belts shrink the frame and let the opponent's own shoulder do the near-side work.
The arm triangle can be entered from either dominant top position, and the finishing footwork differs.
From side control, the attacker is already off to one side. The classic finish is to keep the chest tight to the opponent's near shoulder, sprawl the hips low and back so there is no space, and walk the feet toward the opponent's head while squeezing — driving the shoulder harder into the neck as the hips settle. Many high-level finishes add the crunch: bringing the knees and elbows toward each other so the whole body, not just the arms, closes the ring.
From mount, the trap is often set first — arm pinned, head scooped — and then the attacker dismounts to the side, sliding off toward the trapped-arm side into a perpendicular, chest-to-chest pressure. This is the exact motion Souza used against Camozzi: mount to set it, then the walk-off to the side to finish it. The dismount is counterintuitive to newer players, who feel that leaving mount is giving something up; in fact the corkscrew off the top multiplies the choking force by adding the hips' weight to the squeeze. The reference biomechanics here are stark: with a tight seal, the position is among the faster strangles in grappling, capable of ending a fight in single-digit seconds once it is truly locked.
A note on the gi: the arm triangle is essentially gi-agnostic. Unlike the cross-collar choke, it needs no lapel — the "collar" is the opponent's own shoulder. That gi-independence is exactly why it travels so cleanly from IBJJF mats to no-gi to MMA.
Three neighbors get confused with it, and the distinctions are mechanical, not pedantic.
The clean way to file it: the arm triangle is the top-and-side, shoulder-pinned member of the head-and-arm family. Anything attacked from underneath is a triangle; anything attacked from a front headlock is a D'Arce or anaconda.
In 2026, the arm triangle occupies an unusual place: it is simultaneously a fundamentals-level technique taught in every beginner curriculum and a finish that appears at the very top of no-gi grappling and MMA. Few submissions span that range so comfortably.
Its durability comes from a strategic fit that has only grown stronger. As passing systems have become more pressure-oriented and more oriented toward mount and back rather than static side control, the arm triangle sits exactly where those passes arrive. A modern passer who lands in mount is often one head-scoop away from the choke, and the walk-off finish rewards precisely the low, heavy, hip-driven style that dominant top players already train. The choke is not a detour from the passing game; it is its natural terminus.
In MMA the position carries an additional advantage that grappling-only athletes sometimes underrate: it is a submission a fighter can hunt without ever exposing a limb to be struck or scrambled away. Because the finishing surface is chest, head, and clasped arms — no isolated arm extended, no leg entanglement — the arm triangle is a low-risk finish in a striking context. That is a large part of why it recurs in the cage in the hands of grappling-first fighters, Souza foremost among them.
The one live tension in the modern game is the escape race. Because the position telegraphs — the opponent knows the instant his arm is trapped high that the choke is coming — defenders have refined a small set of urgent counters: turning into the attacker to relieve the shoulder pressure before the seal is complete, and framing to rebuild the trapped arm's space in the two-second window before the hips walk off. The result is that at the elite level the arm triangle has become a race between the attacker's walk-to-the-side and the defender's turn-in. The choke has not been solved; it has been sped up on both sides.
Two cleanly documented finishes, both from the sport's most identified arm-triangle practitioner, illustrate the range of the technique from the wrestling-heavy Strikeforce era to the modern UFC.
White belt meets the arm triangle first as a victim — trapped under a heavier partner's mount, one arm pinned across his own throat, learning viscerally that the shoulder is doing the choking. The first lesson is defensive: keep the elbow tight and never let a passer trap the arm high.
Blue belt learns to finish the one he stumbles into, usually from mount, and learns the single most important detail — that leaving mount to walk off to the side is not a mistake but the finish. The blue-belt error is squeezing from square on top and wondering why it slips.
Purple belt learns to hunt it: to bait the frame that traps the arm, to funnel a guard pass directly into the choke, and to add the crunch when the walk-off alone will not close it.
Brown belt learns the escape race from both sides — how to seal before the opponent turns in, and how to turn in before an opponent seals — and starts treating the arm triangle as a threat that opens other passes rather than only a finish in itself.
Black belt treats it as a system, not a technique: a family of entries (from mount, from side control, from a failed north-south, from a scramble) all funneling into the same trapped-shoulder geometry, with the mount and back available as the branches when the choke is defended.
1. Trapping the arm too low. If the opponent's elbow is at his chest rather than his arm at his ear, the softer bicep — not the shoulder — beds into the neck, and the near carotid never closes. Drive the arm high, wrist toward the opponent's own head, before you clasp.
2. Staying square on top. The most common blue-belt failure: finishing from directly on top of mount or chest-to-chest square, where the ring cannot fully close. The pressure lives in the walk to the side and the settling hips. Get off-line.
3. Lifting the head. A raised head unseals the near carotid and hands the opponent the space to turn in and recover the arm. The head stays heavy, driving across, ear toward the mat.
4. Pulling instead of shrinking. Yanking on the opponent's neck with the arms alone is weaker than contracting the entire ring — elbows in, knees in, hips down. The choke is a shrinking frame, not a bicep curl.
5. Racing a fresh opponent instead of first killing the space. Attempting to walk off before the chest and sprawl have eliminated the opponent's room lets him turn in and escape in the two-second window. Kill the space first, then walk. Speed comes from tightness, not hurry.
At open mat this week, isolate the position, not the scramble. Start already in mount on a same-rank partner with one of his arms pre-trapped high alongside his head. Your only job for a fifteen-minute round: scoop the head, clasp palm-to-palm, dismount to the trapped-arm side, sprawl your hips, and walk your feet toward his head while your partner defends only by turning in. Reset every time either the seal completes or he turns free.
You will feel exactly where the choke lives — that it is the walk to the side and the settling hips, not the strength of your arms. Add a second round beginning from side control, hunting the same trapped shoulder, to feel how differently the footwork finishes from each starting position. Do not add submissions from anywhere else. Six weeks of this, and the arm triangle stops being a thing you catch and starts being a place you steer toward.

Learn the arm triangle and you have not learned one submission; you have learned the reason guard passing does not end when the guard is passed.
