The anaconda is the roll-to-finish half of the front-headlock's blood-choke pair — the mirror of the D'Arce, born in the Luta Livre gyms of 1990s Brazil and carried to a global audience by a heavyweight who made it look inevitable. At UFC 310, inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on 7 December 2024, Vicente Luque needed fifty-two seconds. He caught Themba Gorimbo with a right hand, followed him down as he ducked, and found the front headlock every wrestler and every grappler has been in a thousand times. Most of those thousand times, nothing happens: the man on the bottom stands, or circles, or pulls his head free. Luque did not let that sequence begin. He fed his arm under the neck, clasped his hands, and rolled. Gorimbo went to sleep. It was, by the count kept in the sport's record-books, the fastest anaconda-choke finish in UFC history.
Fifty-two seconds is the wrong number to remember, though. The number that matters is the one you cannot see: the fraction of a second in which Luque decided which choke the position was giving him. A front headlock with the opponent's arm trapped inside offers two blood chokes that look nearly identical to a spectator and feel completely different to the person applying them. One stays on top and squeezes. The other threads under the neck and rolls. Choose the wrong one for the grip you actually have, and the opponent stands up and the moment is gone.
This is the story of the second one — the one that rolls. It has a snake's name because it works like a snake: it does not strike, it wraps, and each time the prey exhales the coil takes the slack. It is younger than most of the positions in this series, with a traceable birthplace and a disputed inventor. And it almost never travels alone. Learn the anaconda and you have, whether you meant to or not, started learning the D'Arce, the guillotine, and the entire front-headlock family that the modern no-gi game is built on.
The anaconda is not a different submission from the D'Arce. It is the same front-headlock vise entered from the other doorway — and the door the position leaves open tells you which one to walk through.
The anaconda choke is one of the rare submissions in jiu-jitsu with a named modern origin rather than a folk one, and even that origin is contested — which is itself a very jiu-jitsu situation.
The name most often attached to it is Milton "Miltinho" Vieira, a Brazilian grappler and mixed-martial-artist who came up not through the Gracie gi lineage but through Luta Livre, the no-gi submission-wrestling tradition that grew in Rio de Janeiro as a rival to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through the 1980s and 1990s. Vieira later earned a jiu-jitsu black belt under Murilo Bustamante and joined the Brazilian Top Team, the powerhouse squad Bustamante helped found. He is widely credited with developing and popularizing the anaconda as a competition weapon in the late 1990s, and he brought it — along with his approach to the related front-headlock chokes — into a room full of fighters who were about to become the most-watched grapplers on earth.
The credit is not undisputed. Luta Livre figures have pushed back on the idea that any one person "invented" a choke that, in its raw shape, has existed as long as men have wrestled for a front headlock; one Luta Livre coach has said the position was already in the tradition before Vieira started training. That objection is fair and worth stating plainly: what Vieira can be reliably credited with is systematizing and naming the technique and putting it in front of a generation of fighters, not conjuring it from nothing. The submission tree in grappling rarely has a single planter. What it has is the person who fenced off the plot and taught the crop.
The fighter who turned the anaconda from a Brazilian club-circuit trick into a globally recognized finish was Antônio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira. A Brazilian Top Team heavyweight and one of the defining grapplers of the PRIDE Fighting Championships era in Japan, Nogueira absorbed Vieira's front-headlock chokes and made them part of a heavyweight submission game that was, at the time, without peer. At PRIDE Total Elimination 2004 on 25 April 2004, he submitted the Japanese fighter Hirotaka Yokoi with an anaconda choke — one of the finishes that put the technique's name into English-language broadcast commentary and, from there, into gyms worldwide. For millions of viewers who had never set foot on a mat, the anaconda was simply "that thing Nogueira does."
The naming is the easy part to explain and the easy part to get wrong. The choke is called the anaconda not because of any single dramatic squeeze but because of the manner of the squeeze: the attacker's arm spirals under the neck and around the trapped shoulder, the grip closes like a constrictor's coil, and the finishing roll tightens the wrap the way a snake tightens each time its prey breathes out. It is a description of a mechanism, not a marketing flourish — and the mechanism is what separates it from its near-twin.
Everything about the anaconda begins in one position: the front headlock. The opponent's head is down — because he shot a takedown, turtled, was sprawled on, or ducked under a punch — and crucially, one of his arms is inside, trapped against his own head. In front-headlock language this is the arm-in configuration. It is the single fact that opens the door to the anaconda and the D'Arce; without a trapped arm, you have a guillotine or nothing.
Which arm is trapped is the whole conversation. In a standard front headlock you are chest-to-back-of-head with the opponent, and the arm that is inside — the one on your side of his body, pressed to his neck — is the near arm. Both the anaconda and the D'Arce attack a front headlock with that near arm trapped. They are not distinguished by which arm they take. They are distinguished by where the choking arm travels to complete the vise, and by how the finish is achieved.
The D'Arce path (for contrast). The choking arm threads under the trapped near arm — into the armpit first — and continues across the front of the throat, the hand surfacing over the far shoulder or the far side of the back. The attacker's bicep presses one carotid; the opponent's own trapped shoulder is driven into the other. The D'Arce finishes by pressure: flattening the opponent, closing the figure-four, and dropping weight. It is, in the main, a top-position, stay-put choke. The anaconda path. The choking arm threads the other way — under the neck first, diving beneath the chin and throat, and continues all the way through to surface under the near armpit, on the far side of the trapped arm. The hands then meet in a rear-naked-choke-style figure-four: choking hand clasping the biceps of the support arm, support hand behind the opponent's head or shoulder. Now the geometry is set. The attacker's own shoulder and upper arm crush one side of the neck; the opponent's trapped shoulder, jammed up into his own jaw by the wrap, crushes the other. It is a blood choke — pressure on the carotid arteries, not the windpipe — which is why a correctly applied anaconda puts an opponent out quickly and without the coughing, gasping resistance of an air choke.
The gator roll. Here is the anaconda's signature and the reason it is a distinct submission rather than a footnote to the D'Arce. A front headlock is unstable; the man in it wants to stand, and if he stands, he leaves. Rather than fight that momentum, the anaconda uses it. The attacker rolls toward the trapped-arm side — the wrestler's "gator roll" — carrying the opponent up onto his own shoulder and over, so that the attacker ends flat on his back or side with the opponent's own body weight settling into the choke from above. The roll does three things at once: it removes the opponent's base so he cannot posture up and relieve the pressure; it winds the coil one turn tighter; and it puts the attacker in the most stable possible finishing frame — flat, heavy, and nearly impossible to reverse. Done well, the roll and the tap are almost the same motion.
The most valuable thing about the anaconda is not the finish. It is what the front headlock tells you. When you have the arm-in front headlock and you feel where the opponent's trapped elbow and shoulder sit — how deep your own choking arm can travel, whether it wants to slide under the arm or under the neck — the position is handing you a choice between the D'Arce and the anaconda. The two are complementary options off the same control, and the orientation of the trapped arm and the space available dictates which one is there. This is the logic Marcelo Garcia made famous with his front-headlock game: the guillotine, the D'Arce, and the anaconda are not three techniques to memorize but three exits from one room, and the good grappler takes whichever door the opponent leaves open rather than forcing the one he rehearsed. You do not choose the anaconda. You notice it.
In 2026, the anaconda lives at the busiest intersection in no-gi jiu-jitsu: the front headlock. That intersection has never been more central to how matches are won. The rise of leg-lock-heavy, scramble-heavy no-gi grappling — ADCC, the sub-only circuit, the professional cards — has meant more takedown attempts, more failed shots, more turtles, and more sprawls than the gi-centric competition of two decades ago. Every one of those situations is a front headlock waiting to happen, and every front headlock with the arm in is an anaconda or a D'Arce waiting to happen.
What has changed is not the choke but the density of entries around it. The modern front-headlock specialist does not hunt the anaconda in isolation. He hunts the control, then reads. Off a defended guillotine, the opponent's arm often floats inside — anaconda. Off a sprawl on a shot, the head is down and an arm is in — D'Arce or anaconda depending on the angle. Off a turtle break, the same. The submissions have been networked into the position the way modern guard attacks are chained: the finish you complete is a function of the defense you're handed, not a plan you committed to at the start. In mixed martial arts the anaconda has kept a steady presence precisely because the gator roll suits a cage. The finish keeps the attacker flat and low, out of the range of the strikes a desperate opponent might throw, and it capitalizes on the exact instinct — shooting a takedown, ducking a punch — that puts the head down in the first place. Luque's fifty-two-second finish in December 2024 was a headline because of its speed, but the shape of it was utterly conventional: a hurt opponent lowered his level, and the front headlock did the rest. That is the anaconda's quiet argument for itself. It does not require you to create the position. It requires you to recognize it and to have practiced the roll enough that recognition and finish are the same reflex.
Two finishes worth studying, chosen because each is verifiable and each teaches a different lesson about the choke.
A third, gi-versus-no-gi note worth an editor's flag rather than a paragraph: because the anaconda is a blood choke that needs no lapel, it is one of the front-headlock chokes that translates cleanly between gi and no-gi and between grappling and MMA — one of the few submissions equally at home in all four contexts. That breadth, more than any single match, is the case for learning it early.
White belt meets the anaconda as a thing that happens to them: they shoot a sloppy double, their head goes down, an arm gets stuck, and suddenly they are being rolled. The first lesson is defensive — do not give up the front headlock with your arm inside; when you shoot, finish or recover, do not stall with your head down.
Blue belt learns the grip and the roll as a technique, usually badly at first, forcing the anaconda when only the head is in and wondering why the opponent keeps standing up. The lesson of blue belt is the trapped arm: no arm, no anaconda.
Purple belt learns to read the front headlock — to feel whether the D'Arce or the anaconda is the one available, and to stop forcing a favorite. This is the shift from having a technique to having a position.
Brown belt learns the entries: how the anaconda falls out of a defended guillotine, a sprawl, a turtle break, a whizzer battle, so that the choke is no longer something separate from the scramble but the scramble's natural conclusion.
Black belt learns the threat game — using the anaconda's presence to force the reactions that open the D'Arce, the back, or the far-side guillotine, so that the finish that lands is whichever one the opponent defended toward. The anaconda becomes a question the opponent has to answer, and every answer costs him something.
1. Attacking with no arm trapped. The single most common error, and the one that defines the technique. If only the head is inside the front headlock, the anaconda is not there — you are trying to force a choke the position is not offering, and the opponent will posture up and out. Confirm the arm is in before you commit.
2. A shallow choking arm. Threading only the hand under the neck instead of driving the shoulder past the centerline. The vise needs your upper arm to be one of its two walls; if only your wrist is through, you are squeezing air and jaw, not carotid. Get deep, then clasp.
3. Squeezing the neck instead of building the frame. Beginners crank on the grip and hope. The finish is structural: trapped shoulder into one carotid, your shoulder into the other, and the roll removing the opponent's base. If the frame is right, a modest squeeze finishes; if the frame is wrong, no amount of squeeze will.
4. Rolling the wrong way. The gator roll goes toward the trapped-arm side. Roll the other way and you unwind the coil and dump the opponent into a scramble on top of you. Drill the direction until it is reflex.
5. Racing the roll ahead of the grip. Rolling before the figure-four is locked throws away the finish and often the position. Secure the clasp, feel the trapped shoulder pinned, then roll. The roll finishes a choke that is already there; it does not create one from nothing.
At open mat this week, start every rep from the same place: a partner on all fours or turtled, you attacking a front headlock. Round one, one rule — you may only secure the arm-in control and confirm, out loud, whether the anaconda or the D'Arce is available. No finish. You are training the read, not the squeeze.
Round two, add the anaconda only. From a confirmed arm-in front headlock, thread under the neck, clasp the figure-four, and gator-roll to the finish, your partner offering graduated resistance. Reset and repeat from the same entry ten times before you change anything, so the roll direction becomes automatic.
Round three, chain it: partner defends the guillotine, you feel the arm float inside, you flow to the anaconda. Partner defends the anaconda by clearing the arm, you flow to the D'Arce or the far-side guillotine. The goal is not to land the anaconda. The goal is to stop treating it as a separate technique and start treating it as one exit from a room with several doors.
