If any single competitor currently owns the position's public identity, it is Tinoco.
A third name matters for the modern game: Jonnatas Gracie, an Atos black belt under André Galvão (awarded 2019) and a multiple-time IBJJF World, European, and Pan American champion at the colored-belt level before turning black belt, with an ADCC South American Trials runner-up finish in 2024 that qualified him for that year's ADCC World Championship. Gracie is widely cited for building sweep sequences directly out of lasso guard, and his own instructional, Next Level Lasso Guard, is part of the current BJJ Fanatics catalog.
The instructional catalog beyond these three is unusually deep for a single position — deeper, in fact, than many higher-profile guards enjoy. BJJ Fanatics alone lists, in addition to the titles above, Jared Welman's Fix Your Fundamentals: Spider and Lasso Guard (Welman is a black belt under Bernardo Faria), Jorge Valladares' Lasso Guard Solutions and Practice Designs, Jeferson Guaresi's The Beginner-to-Pro Lasso Guard, Hiago Gama's The Snake Lasso Guard, and Gabriel Almeida's Lasso Guard Attacks & Omoplata Mastery. Lachlan Giles has released a dedicated Lasso Guard course through Submeta. This is a position that has been treated, repeatedly and independently, as worth a standalone curriculum — the clearest available evidence that the grappling community codifies lasso guard as its own subject rather than a footnote inside spider guard.
A related but separate branch is worth naming honestly rather than folding it in. Keenan Cornelius, working from the lapel rather than the sleeve, publicly debuted what became known as worm guard at the 2014 Pan American Championships against Murilo Santana, and later built a "lapel lasso" chapter into his broader Lapel Encyclopedia system. Worm guard traps a leg with the lapel rather than an arm with the shin, so it is not lasso guard by the definition this article uses — but it shares the same underlying principle: wrap loose fabric or a limb around a limb, and convert a grip that can be stripped into a lock that has to be broken. Cornelius's lapel system is best read as evidence of how far that principle generalized, not as a lasso-guard match to be filed under this position.
Lasso guard is defined by a small number of hard constraints. Meet all of them and you are in lasso guard; drop any one and you have slid into a neighboring position — usually spider guard, occasionally a sit-up guard or a straight sleeve control — that plays by different rules.
1. A shin threaded around the outside of the opponent's arm. This is the position's entire identity. From a standard open-guard entry, the bottom player brings one leg up and inside the space between the opponent's arm and torso, then hooks the shin over the outside of the arm so the leg wraps it rather than simply resting against it. The shin sits across the biceps or, in a deeper variation, buries the foot into the armpit or across the back — the "deep lasso." A shallower version keeps the shin on the biceps purely for distance management. Either way, the leg is around the arm, not merely touching it.
2. A same-side sleeve grip on the wrapped arm. The wrap alone does not hold anything; it needs the hand to close the loop. The same-side sleeve grip pulls the trapped arm across the opponent's own centerline while the shin blocks it from being withdrawn or repositioned. Grip and wrap work as a single mechanism — remove either one and the arm comes free.
3. A loaded hip angle, tilted toward the lasso side. Because the position has committed one leg to wrapping an arm, the bottom player's hips must turn to load that side, generating leverage through the trapped limb rather than through the legs alone. A lasso played square, hips flat to the mat, gives up most of the position's sweeping power and turns it into a stationary hold.
4. A free leg doing independent work. The second leg is not idle. It manages the opponent's other side — hooking a hip, bracing a knee, framing on the far biceps in a spider-style push, or setting up an inversion — while the lasso leg stays committed to the wrap. This is the structural difference from a double-bicep spider guard, where both legs are doing the same job on opposite arms; lasso guard is asymmetric by design, one leg locked, one leg free.
5. Continuous pulling tension, never a static hold. Like spider guard, lasso guard is isometric rather than restful. The sleeve grip and the wrap must keep pulling and loading, cycling tension as the opponent tries to posture, circle, or extract the trapped arm. A lasso that goes slack for even a moment gives the opponent's arm room to work itself free of the shin.
The mechanical case for lasso guard as its own position, rather than a variation described inside a spider-guard article, comes down to what happens to the opponent's arm once each guard is engaged.
In spider guard, the arm is pushed. A foot on the biceps drives the limb up and away, managing distance and loading spring tension that the bottom player can release as a sweep — but the arm itself is still the opponent's to move. Strip the sleeve grip and the arm is immediately free; the foot alone provides no lasting hold, because a bare or gripped foot slides the instant the opponent rotates the forearm.
In lasso guard, the arm is trapped. The shin is wrapped around it, not resting against it, and a wrap cannot be stripped the way a grip can be broken — the opponent has to physically extract the limb from a loop of leg, which takes time and telegraphs the attempt. This single mechanical fact — push versus wrap — inverts who is under pressure to move first. In spider guard, the top player manages a pushed-away arm and looks for the moment the foot slips. Sweeps — the lasso sweep and its X-guard extension. The base lasso sweep pulls the trapped sleeve while the free leg or hip drives the opponent's base sideways over the wrapped arm, which cannot post to stop the fall because it is already committed to the lasso. The omoplata. Because the shin already has one arm trapped and the free leg is available to swing, lasso guard feeds the omoplata directly: control the far side, swing the free leg over the wrapped shoulder, and the shoulder-lock is already half-built by the position itself. The triangle. When the opponent tries to free the trapped arm by driving it across the body rather than pulling it straight back, the same motion isolates it against the far leg — the setup for a triangle rather than an omoplata. Which of the two submissions is live depends on which direction the opponent chooses to fight the wrap, which is why lasso players are trained to read the direction of the opponent's escape attempt before committing to either finish.
The armbar. A trapped, extended arm that cannot posture away is also an armbar waiting on the right angle. Tinoco's own instructional material foregrounds the armbar as a natural extension of a held lasso, consistent with his reputation for pairing the position with the joint lock rather than treating them as separate skills.
Every other lasso-guard attack — collar-drag entries into a deeper lasso, transitions into spider or De la Riva when the wrap is stripped, the various inverted variations — is a bridge into one of these four families or into a neighboring guard, not a fifth stand-alone attack.
Lasso guard's place in 2026 tracks closely with spider guard's, for the same underlying reason: both are sleeve-dependent, and the sleeve only exists in the gi. Strip the jacket and there is no cuff to hold and nothing for the shin to wrap around but bare skin, which slides. Lasso guard, like spider guard, is a gi position by definition, not by current fashion — no-gi grapplers who reach for an overhook or a rubber-guard-style leg-over-shoulder are borrowing the geometry, not playing the position.
Inside gi competition, lasso remains concentrated in the lighter and more flexible weight classes, where the athletic cost of holding an isometric wrap against a stronger passer is lowest and the payoff — a delayed, controlled arm feeding a submission — is highest. Jonnatas Gracie and Marcos Tinoco represent the position's current competitive face; both build finishing sequences directly out of the wrap rather than treating it as a stopover on the way to something else. Michelle Nicolini, an eight-time IBJJF World Champion and IBJJF Hall of Fame member competing out of Checkmat under Robert Drysdale, is frequently mentioned in the same breath as lasso guard by casual observers, and the correction is worth making precisely: her signature is a shin-on-shin guard, integrated with spider guard, that uses shin-to-shin contact for elevation and distance rather than a shin wrapped fully around the opponent's arm. It is a close relative, built on the same family of leg-and-sleeve control, but it is not the same mechanism as lasso guard as defined here — a distinction her own instructional material, released separately from any lasso-specific title, makes clear.
As with spider guard, the honest 2026 answer to "is lasso guard still relevant" is that it is exactly as relevant as it has always been inside the ecosystem it was built for — IBJJF gi competition — and largely invisible outside it, because the sport's broadcast attention has shifted toward no-gi submission-only formats where the position cannot exist. The visibility has changed. The mechanics, and the specialists who use them, have not.
The position's clearest recent, fully sourced example is also its most instructive, because it shows the modern chained version of the guard rather than an isolated finish.
Lebre, representing AOJ, pulled guard and played lasso, inverted underneath Monteiro, rose into X-guard, and completed a sweep with roughly thirty seconds remaining to close the match 4–2. The win completed Lebre's sweep of all four IBJJF major titles that season — Brazilian Nationals, European Open, Pan Americans, and Worlds. The sequence is a clean, dated illustration of how the modern game uses lasso as an entry into a sweep chain rather than as a standalone finish.
Tinoco has multiple IBJJF World Championship black-belt medals (silver and bronze are documented across his competitive record), earned with a game built explicitly around lasso guard and the armbar chains that follow from it. The exact years and divisions of each medal should be confirmed against the IBJJF archive before a specific scoreline or date is asserted (see Known Open Items) — the pattern that is solidly true is a career, not a single highlight, built on this position.
Moura's five IBJJF World Championship golds and one bronze, across a career recognized with IBJJF Hall of Fame induction, established the kind of technically dense open-guard game — including the "frame lasso" variation he later taught as a discrete instructional — that lasso specialists after him built on. His bio material does not tie a specific dated match finish to the lasso itself, so this entry is offered as career context rather than a single decisive bout.
A caution belongs here, in the same spirit as the sibling article on spider guard: several widely circulated "signature lasso match" claims attached to older competitors could not be independently verified against a scoresheet during research for this piece and have accordingly been left out rather than printed on the strength of a highlight-reel caption. White belt learns the wrap before anything else — how to thread the shin around the arm and keep the sleeve grip, against a partner who is only trying to pull the arm free. Blue belt learns to load the hip angle rather than playing the lasso square. The realization that the position needs a turned, asymmetric base — not a flat back — to generate real sweeping power is the blue-belt shift.
Purple belt starts reading the opponent's escape direction and choosing triangle or omoplata accordingly, rather than committing to one finish and hoping. The purple belt also begins cycling between lasso and spider proactively, switching the wrap on and off as the passer defends one or the other.
Brown belt networks lasso into the inversion-and-X-guard chain that decided Lebre's 2025 Worlds final — using the wrap as a safe entry into an inversion rather than the finishing mechanism itself. The brown belt treats a stripped lasso as a transition cue, not a crisis.
Black belt plays the wrap and the grip fight simultaneously, several moves ahead, the way Tinoco's game is described by those who have trained with or studied him — anticipating which direction the opponent will try to extract the trapped arm and having the omoplata or triangle already loaded before the extraction attempt begins.
1. Resting the shin instead of wrapping it. The single most common entry-level error, and the one that erases the position's entire advantage over spider guard. A shin merely laid across the biceps, without the hook that closes the wrap, is stripped exactly as easily as a foot — the practitioner has all of lasso guard's isometric fatigue cost and none of its lock. Thread the shin fully around the arm; do not settle for contact.
2. Playing the lasso square. Hips flat, spine pointed straight at the opponent, is a spider-guard mistake that is worse in lasso guard, because the position depends on loading one side through the trapped arm. A square lasso gives up most of its sweeping leverage and turns into a static hold a strong passer can eventually muscle through.
3. Committing both legs to the wrap. Lasso guard's asymmetry — one leg locked, one leg free — is a feature, not an oversight. Practitioners who try to wrap with both legs, or who let the free leg go idle instead of hooking a hip or bracing a knee, lose the second attack line that makes lasso guard more than a stall.
4. Freezing on the wrap and forgetting the grip. The shin and the sleeve grip are a single mechanism, not a backup pair. A practitioner who holds the wrap but lets the sleeve grip go slack gives the opponent room to rotate the trapped arm and work it loose over time, even against a technically correct shin position.
5. No plan for when the wrap is stripped. Every lasso guard eventually gets challenged successfully. A practitioner without a rehearsed exit — back to spider, into a sit-up guard, into the inversion-to-X-guard chain — is in the same trouble a closed-guard player without an opening plan is in. The position must be taught with its exits, not as an island.
At open mat this week, isolate the wrap itself. Fifteen-minute round, one rule: from a standing or seated start, you are only trying to establish and hold the full shin-around-the-arm lasso with the matching sleeve grip, while your partner is only trying to extract the trapped arm and posture up. No sweeps, no submissions attempted. You will lose the wrap constantly at first — that is the expected result, not a sign you are doing it wrong.
Add a second round in which you hold the wrap and are allowed exactly one attack, the basic lasso sweep and nothing else, against a partner defending fully. Isolating the single finish forces the mechanics of the pull-and-drive that the omoplata, triangle, and armbar chains all build from later. Repeat weekly for six weeks, and add the inversion-to-X-guard entry only once the base wrap is reliable — the sequence that won Janaina Lebre a World title in 2025 is the advanced version of the same round you are running in week one.
Lasso guard is one of the most tightly connected nodes in the gi's open-guard network — rarely played in isolation, almost always as a switching partner to its neighbors.
The lesson the map teaches is the same one spider guard's map teaches, sharpened: nobody wins elite gi matches on lasso guard alone. They win by switching between lasso and its neighbors fast enough that stripping one grip only moves the fight to the next room.
