A frame is the most important thing a white belt is never formally taught. It is a rigid skeletal structure — usually a forearm or a shin — placed between you and an opponent's pressure, and it is the hidden first move of every escape and every guard retention in the sport. Learn to frame and you stop getting crushed; fail to, and no amount of strength saves you.
A heavier training partner has just passed your guard and dropped his chest onto yours. His shoulder is buried in your jaw. His hips are low and heavy, spread wide for base. You cannot draw a full breath. Every instinct built by a lifetime of not being pinned tells you the same thing: get your hands on him and push.
So you push. You plant both palms on his chest and press with everything you have. He does not move. What moves, instead, is you — deeper into the mat, because in straightening your arms you have handed him two levers and postured yourself flat. A moment later he steps a knee across your belly and it is worse than before.
This is the universal introduction to being on the bottom in jiu-jitsu, and the reason it happens is not that you are weak. It is that you are trying to move a person who outweighs you when the entire discipline exists to make that unnecessary. The correction is one of the smallest physical adjustments in the sport and one of the largest conceptual ones. You are not supposed to push him away. You are supposed to build a wall — an angled, bone-hard strut of your own forearm wedged between his weight and your centerline — and then leave the wall exactly where it is while you slide your hips out from underneath.
That wall is a frame. It does not move the opponent. It occupies space, holds it against pressure, and gives you a pocket of room to move into. Every escape a jiu-jitsu practitioner ever performs from the bottom begins with one. Every guard a practitioner ever keeps is kept by one. And almost no one is taught, in so many words, what it is or how it works. Coaches say "frame" the way they say "hip escape" — as if the meaning were self-evident — and students nod and go on bench-pressing bigger people for two or three years until, one day, something clicks and the room stops feeling so heavy.
This is the article about the wall.
A frame does not move your opponent. It holds space against his weight so that you can move — bone against gravity, not muscle against muscle. Every escape and every guard retention in jiu-jitsu is, underneath, a frame followed by a movement into the space the frame created.
Frames have no invention date, no founding match, no named originator. The reason is simple: a frame is not a technique. It is a mechanical principle that predates jiu-jitsu, predates judo, and predates any organized grappling — the same principle a person uses to hold a door against a shove, or to keep a heavy dog off the couch with a stiff arm. Kōdōkan judo's ne-waza is full of it. So is Greco-Roman wrestling, whose whole clinch game is an argument about frames and underhooks. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu did not discover framing. What the art did, over roughly a century, was slowly promote framing from an unspoken habit of good grapplers into an explicit, teachable idea with a name.
For most of the sport's history that promotion was incomplete. The early Gracie curriculum, built around the self-defense and the guard, certainly used frames — the hip-escape sequence from under mount is nothing but a two-frame structure and a shrimp — but the language taught to students was the language of the movement, not of the structure underneath it. You were told to shrimp. You were not always told that the shrimp only works because your forearms have first stolen the space you are shrimping into.
The clearest articulation of frames as a first-class concept comes from two overlapping sources, and both should be named with the caveat that this is a story about emphasis, not invention. The first is Rickson Gracie's notion of what he calls "invisible jiu-jitsu" — the layer of weight distribution, connection, and structure that a spectator cannot see but an opponent can feel. Rickson's framing (the word is unavoidable) treats the skeletal, space-holding details as the actual content of the art, with the visible techniques sitting on top of them. His student Henry Akins has spent years teaching a closely related system he calls "hidden jiu-jitsu," organized around exactly these unseen structural details. The specific vocabulary differs between teachers and should be attributed loosely; the shared idea — that structure precedes technique — is what matters here.
The second source is Saulo Ribeiro, whose 2008 book Jiu-Jitsu University, written with Kevin Howell, did something no widely circulated instructional had done so plainly before: it organized the entire bottom game around survival first, and built each position's survival posture out of defensive frames before a single attack was introduced. Ribeiro's often-quoted line — "If you think, you are late. If you are late, you use strength. If you use strength, you tire. And if you tire, you die." — is, read carefully, an argument for framing. Strength is what you fall back on when your structure has already failed. Get the frame in early enough and you never spend the strength.
By the 2010s the concept had a settled name and a settled place in how the sport is taught. Today "frame" is a word a competent white belt hears in their first month. Whether they understand it is another matter — but the vocabulary, at least, is finally explicit.
A frame is a rigid strut. Its job is to transmit an opponent's incoming force around your vulnerable structures and into something that can bear it — the mat, or your own hips and torso — so that his weight is supported by your skeleton rather than resisted by your muscle. Four properties separate a real frame from a straight arm getting crushed.
1. It is built from bone, in alignment — not from muscle, in tension. The defining fact about frames is that they do not fatigue, because bone does not fatigue. A forearm stacked at the right angle can hold a much larger person's weight indefinitely, the way a short wooden post holds a roof, because the load runs down the length of the bone into a supported base. The instant the load runs across the bone instead of down it, the frame stops being skeletal and starts being muscular — and a muscular frame is on a clock, because now you are holding the weight up with your triceps and shoulders, and those will tire and be out-muscled by anyone heavier. A frame is a structural claim: my skeleton is in the way, and you cannot get through my skeleton without moving your whole body around it.
2. The elbow stays in — the single most important detail. The most common failure of an upper-body frame is a flared elbow. When the elbow drifts away from your ribs, two things go wrong at once. The joint can now be folded, because force meets it side-on where it is weak, and the gap between your elbow and your body becomes an invitation — a channel for the opponent to slide an underhook or a crossface into. A frame with the elbow drawn tight to the torso routes the opponent's weight down your forearm and into your own frame; a frame with the elbow winged out routes it straight into a collapse. Almost every correction a good coach makes to a struggling student's frame is some version of elbow in.
3. Frames come in pairs — one strut defines a line; two define a room. A single frame can stall an opponent, but he can circle around one strut the way water goes around a single post. The functional unit is two frames working together to wall off a channel of space. The archetype is the bottom side-control survival structure: one forearm framed across the near side of the opponent's neck or collarbone, the other hand framing on his hip or braced against his shoulder. The neck frame stops him from stapling your upper body; the hip frame stops him from sliding up toward mount. Between the two frames sits a protected pocket — and that pocket is the room your hips will travel into. One frame buys time. Two frames buy an escape.
4. Frames belong to the legs as much as the arms. The word conjures a forearm, but the most-used frames in modern jiu-jitsu are made of shins and feet. A foot on the hip is a frame. A knee shield wedged across an opponent's chest in half guard is a frame. The shin-across-the-hips structure at the heart of most open-guard retention is a frame. Legs are longer and far stronger than arms, so leg frames hold more space against more pressure — which is precisely why the retention games that dominate the sport are built on them. Everything true of a forearm frame is true of a shin frame: bone in line, "elbow in" becomes knee and foot tracking the same load path, and two beat one.
Frames are one of three ways your limbs interact with an opponent, and beginners blur them constantly. Separating them is most of the concept.
A frame pushes and preserves space. It is a compression strut. It bears weight coming toward you and holds a gap open. Its verb is hold.
A hook pulls and elevates. A butterfly hook under the thigh, a De la Riva hook behind the knee, a heel hooking behind an ankle — these wrap a part of the opponent so you can off-balance, lift, or steer him. A hook works in tension, toward you or upward. Its verb is move.
A grip connects and steers. A sleeve grip, a collar grip, a wrist tie, an overhook — the hand attaches to cloth or limb and becomes the steering wheel that transmits your intentions. Its verb is connect.
The three chain together in that order more often than not: a frame buys the space, a grip establishes the connection, a hook applies the elevation, and a sweep or an escape comes out the far end. Confusing a frame for a grip is the classic error — trying to hold someone still by gripping him, which just tires your hands, or trying to create space by pulling, which drags his weight onto you. The frame pushes. The grip connects. The hook pulls. Keep the three verbs straight and half of the bottom game organizes itself.
A frame is never the finish. It is the setup for a movement, and beginners routinely stall out because they build a beautiful frame and then do nothing with it. The frame holds the space; the hips have to travel into that space. Under side control, that movement is the hip escape — the shrimp — sliding your body backward out from under the weight while the frames keep the weight from following. In guard retention, the frame stalls the pass while you re-pummel your legs back in front of the opponent's hips. The rhythm is always the same two-beat: frame, then move. Frame steals the room; movement spends it. A frame with no movement behind it is just a slower way to get crushed.
If frames were a quietly assumed detail for most of the sport's history, the last decade has dragged them into the center of the conversation — and the reason is a shift in how the top of the sport passes the guard.
Through the 2010s and into the 2020s, elite passing consolidated around a small number of extremely heavy, connection-based methods: the body lock pass, the leg drag, the knee cut behind a smothering shoulder. What these have in common is that they defeat the old, wide open guards not by out-speeding them but by killing space and applying relentless, structured pressure. The counter to structured pressure is structure, and so the guard-retention game that grew up to answer modern passing is, at its core, a leg-and-hip framing game. The vocabulary practitioners now use fluently — knee shields, shin frames, the "framing" of the feet on the hips and biceps, the fight to keep the legs between yourself and the passer — is framing vocabulary, applied below the waist.
This is where the current instructional canon lives. John Danaher's Go Further Faster series devotes an entire volume to guard retention that is functionally a treatise on leg frames and the recovery of frames once they are broken. Estonian coach Priit Mihkelson has built an international following on defensive systems — his "grilled chicken" and "running man" guards — that are almost pure framing structures, taught explicitly as skeletons you assemble rather than movements you perform. The through-line of all of it is the same claim Rickson and Ribeiro were making with different words a generation earlier: the invisible structure is the actual jiu-jitsu, and it can be taught on purpose.
The one genuine change from the older understanding is timing. The classical teaching framed reactively — you were pinned, and then you built a frame to escape. The modern retention game frames pre-emptively. The best guard players get their leg frames in before the pass is complete, treating the frame as something you establish on the way down, in the half-second while the passer is still committing his weight, rather than something you scramble to assemble after he has already settled. Ribeiro's line about being late is, in 2026, a coaching cue about frame timing. Frame early and you are never in survival. Frame late and survival is the best you can hope for.
White belt learns that a frame exists and stops trying to bench-press people. The first, hardest lesson is emotional as much as physical: when the weight comes on, do not push it off — brace against it and get your hips out. If a white belt can build one honest forearm frame under side control and hold it without flaring the elbow, the worst of the drowning is over.
Blue belt learns the two-beat rhythm: frame, then move. The blue-belt realization is that the frame is not the escape — it is the thing that makes the escape possible — and that the hips, not the arms, do the traveling. Blue belt also learns to frame in pairs, walling off a channel rather than propping up a single strut.
Purple belt takes the concept into the legs. Shin frames, knee shields, feet on the hips — the purple belt discovers that the longest, strongest frames are below the waist, and that guard retention is mostly a leg-framing problem. This is usually the belt at which "don't get passed" turns from hope into method.
Brown belt learns to frame early. The brown-belt frame goes in before the pressure lands, on the way down, so that the passer never gets to settle. Frames stop being a rescue and start being a pre-emption. The brown belt also chains frame to grip to hook fluidly, without thinking about which is which.
Black belt makes the frames invisible. The structure is set so early and so precisely that the opponent's pressure never finds a home, and from the outside it looks like the black belt is simply hard to pin for no reason anyone can see. This is the "invisible jiu-jitsu" layer: framing as connection, feeling the direction of an opponent's weight and having a strut already in its path.
Coral belt can name which frame belongs to which position, explain why the elbow goes where it goes, and teach a terrified white belt to stop pushing — which, it turns out, is the whole thing.
1. Straight-arm pushing. The original sin. Extending both arms to shove the opponent away is muscular, collapsible, and self-defeating — it postures you flat and hands over your wrists. The fix is a mental substitution: replace push him off with wedge a strut in and get out. Bent structure, load down the bone, hips do the work.
2. Framing and then not moving. A frame is a setup, not a finish. Students build a solid frame, feel safe, and stall there until the opponent reorganizes and crushes it. The frame only buys a window; the hip escape or the leg re-pummel has to happen inside that window. Frame, then move — one beat, not two separate events.
3. The flared elbow. The most common structural failure. An elbow winged away from the ribs turns a skeletal frame into a foldable one and opens a lane for an underhook or crossface. Keep the elbow tracking down toward your own hip so the opponent's weight runs into your torso, not into a hinge.
4. Trying to move the opponent instead of yourself. Framing is not for relocating the other person; it is for holding space while you relocate. The heavier the partner, the more tempting it is to try to shove him, and the more decisively that fails. Move your hips out from under the weight and leave the wall standing where it is.
5. One frame against a moving opponent. A single strut is easy to circle. Without a second frame defining the other edge of the pocket, the opponent simply walks his weight around the post and re-settles. Build the pair — neck-and-hip, knee-shield-and-underhook — so there is an actual channel to escape through.
At open mat this week, run the pinning-escape drill with the pressure turned up and the pace turned down. Start flattened under a same-size partner's side control. The only rules: your partner applies steady, honest weight and tries to hold you, and you are allowed to do exactly two things — build your frames and hip-escape. No bridging explosions, no scrambling, no submissions. Feel the difference between a frame that holds the weight on your skeleton and one that holds it on your triceps; the first is quiet and the second is loud and fails in about ten seconds.
Then add a leg-frame round. Partner starts on their knees trying to pass; you sit in open guard with one job — keep a shin or a foot framed between their hips and yours, recovering the frame every time they clear it, and never let them establish chest-to-chest. No sweeps, no submissions, just retention.
Do both for six weeks. The heaviness that used to feel like a strength problem will start to feel like a geometry problem — which is the whole point.
Frames are the connective tissue underneath most of the defensive and bottom game, so nearly every position links back to them.
Every one of these positions is, at some layer, a question about where to put a strut and when to move. That shared question is the map.
